Mr. Thurman Matthews Murphy

A True Soldier Remembered Deacon Thurman Matthew "Mike" Murphy was born on March 17, 1955, in Washington, D.C., to the late Thurman Farrior Murphy (2012) and the late Faye Audrey Matthews Murphy (2004). As the eldest of six siblings, Mike was the firstborn brother to Vernon, Virgil, Kelvin, and Anthony, and his only sister, Carol Faye. From the beginning, Mike was grounded in strong family values and raised with an appreciation for perseverance, faith, determination, and the importance of remaining connected to those he loved. Music was an important part of the Murphy household, and Mike grew up surrounded by its influence. As a member of the family gospel singing group, he performed with his family in churches, developing a love and appreciation for music that remained with him throughout his life. Mike also loved to dance. His creativity and playful personality led him to invent his own signature dance, which he proudly called "The Michael Murphy." Mike was a man of great intelligence, quiet strength, and sensitivity. His mind was always exploring something that captured his interest, particularly drawing and working on helicopters. He also had a fascination with cars, especially Ford Mustangs, and had the opportunity to pursue his interest in becoming a disc jockey. These interests reflected the many dimensions of his personality and the distinctive way in which he viewed and experienced the world. Mike began his primary education in the D.C. Public Schools, where he demonstrated an exceptionally high IQ that created an opportunity for him to attend Assumption Catholic High School where he served as an altar boy. At just 17 years of age, Mike enlisted in the United States Army on March 31, 1972. His military service became an important part of his identity and reflected his courage, commitment, discipline, and willingness to sacrifice for something greater than himself, particularly during the Vietnam War era. He received an Honorable Discharge on November 15, 1973, and carried pride of being a veteran throughout his life. Following his military service, Mike worked as a chauffeur and aviation mechanic at Andrews Air Force Base, continuing his connection to aviation and the skills and interests that had captured his imagination from an early age. Mike was kind-hearted and loved deeply. He was a protector by nature, and those who knew him understood that family mattered greatly to him. He was often a man of few words, but when his family needed him, he did not hesitate to demonstrate the courage, loyalty, and instinctive love that lived within him. He would often show up unexpectedly to check on family and friends, greeting them with a broad grin and saying, "I'm just checking on you." Faith was also an important part of Mike's journey. In his youth, Mike identified as Catholic and served as an altar boy. Later in life, he embraced another chapter of spiritual growth and service. Under the guidance and spiritual leadership of his brother, Pastor Kelvin Warren, and Evangelist Sterletta Murphy of Bread of Life Deliverance Ministry, Mike became an ordained deacon. Mike's faith was marked by resilience-the ability to continue moving forward despite circumstances that could have broken many. Through challenging times as well as ordinary days, one phrase consistently reflected his outlook and spirit: "I'm Alright." Those words expressed his ability to endure, his individuality, his determination, and the quiet strength with which he faced life. In his final chapter, Mike was cared for with dignity and surrounded by family, faith, memories, and the love of those who cherished him. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Faye Audrey Murphy; his father, Thurman Farrior Murphy; his brother-in-law, Anthony A. Walls, Sr.; and his niece, Chantelle Murphy. Mike leaves to cherish his memory of his five siblings: Vernon (Sara), Carol Faye (Robert), Virgil (Karen), Kelvin (Sterletta), and Anthony. He also leaves his Uncle James C. Simpson (Marilyn); Aunt Barbara Simpson; Aunt Jacqueline Rice; his best friends, Von (Tawana), Johnnie Gross (Arlene), Edythe Williams (Artis L.), Michael Foster, and Marvin Jackson; and his longtime companion, Jacqueline Jackson. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, other family members, friends, and all who were blessed to know and love him. A true soldier, a faithful servant, a loving brother, a protector, and a uniquely gifted man, Mike lived his life in his own way. His story is not defined by his final chapter, but by the many chapters that came before it-the life he lived, the people he loved, the memories he created, the service he gave, and the enduring impression he left behind. May we remember Mike not simply because he lived, but because of how he lived; not simply because he was loved, but because of how deeply he loved; and not simply because he is missed, but because of how profoundly he will always be remembered.
