DUANE ALONZO COATES

Duane Alonzo Coates, a man of faith, family, and quiet strength, transitioned peacefully from this life on Thursday, February 26, 2026. Born on July 18, 1951, in Washington, DC, he was the only son of the late Dorothy Dykes Tinson, first son of Robert Frank "Buddy" Coates (deceased), and later adopted by his stepfather Frank Tinson (deceased). Duane Alonzo Coates received his early education in the District of Columbia Public Schools and went on to graduate from Armstrong Vocational School. After graduation, Duane began his career with the General Services Administration (GSA) in Washington, DC and later at DC General Hospital. Across 30 years of combined service. Duane had a love of antique cars, admiring the craftsmanship of the earlier eras. He was just as enthusiastic about history, particularly African American history. He could turn any conversation into a thoughtful, engaging discussion about the past, always eager to share knowledge with anyone willing to listen. He also found joy in simple pleasures, most notably a good dozen crabs, a plate of crab cakes, or a steak and cheese from Mario's on Minnesota Avenue in DC which he enjoyed with the same enthusiasm he brought to his hobbies and conversations. Duane Alonzo Coates grew into a man whose gentle spirit and unwavering belief in God guided every step of his life. From an early age, Duane developed a relationship with the Lord. He joined Matthew Memorial Baptist Church in his youth, where he began building the spiritual foundation that would anchor him throughout his life. As he matured in faith, Duane later united with Galilee Baptist Church, continuing his walk with God through service and fellowship. He loved his family deeply and found joy in the simple, meaningful moments-whether gathered around the table, telling stories, listening to music by artist such as, Earth Wind and Fire, Stylistics, Marvin Gaye, Parliament, James Brown, and especially DC GoGo, or watching the Redskins game now the "Washington Commanders", or celebrating life's milestones. His love was constant, his loyalty unwavering, and his faith unshakeable. Duane leaves to cherish his memory: His wife Thomasine Coates of 37 years, his son Duane Alonzo Coates, Jr of Clarksville, TN, his daughters Alida Coates (Jerry) of Newport News, VA, and Gloria "Nickey" Mann (Foster Daughter). His sisters, Roberta Coates, Michele Coates aka "Shelly", Pamela Tinson and Kim Washington. Grandchildren Marilyn Coates, Quinton Coates, Jaylen Coates, Dezirae Coates, and Jaeyani Alexander. Great grandchildren Karma Coates. Aunt Barbara Morris, Sister-in-Law June C. Monterio (Charles Sr.), Brothers-in-Law Dr. Ira C. Harris (Denise), and William E. Washington along with a host of extended relatives, church family, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts. Proceeded Duane in death, his son Durell Coates, his sister Anita Tinson, his nephew Malik Hall, and his great nephew Malik "Silver Back" Carter. Though he has departed from this earthly home, Duane's legacy of faith, love, and compassion will continue to shine through the lives of all who knew and loved him. We rejoice in knowing he is now at peace, resting safely in the arms of the Lord.
