Libby Everett-Hailey was born on November 5, 1927, in Durham, North Carolina to the late Samuel and Libby Brinkley-Everett. From Samuel and Libby's union, 6 children were born: Annie Belle (November 9, 1921 - 1983); Samuel, Jr. (February 10, 1922 - April 18, 1976) James (October 31, 1923 - July 12, 2004); Warren (December 3, 1925 - May 9, 2003) Libby (November 5, 1927 - February 16, 2022); Esther (May 21, 1929 - October 13, 2016) When Libby was age 3, the family relocated to Washington, DC where Libby attended Deanwood Elementary, Brown Junior High and Dunbar Senior High Schools. She later enrolled in Miner Teachers' College majoring in education before venturing out to work for the federal government. Libby married the late John Wesley Hailey on October 17, 1948 and was joined in holy matrimony for 40 years until his death in 1988. This union was blessed with one daughter, Carol Marie Hailey Whitehead (deceased 2002). On June 25, 1979, Libby retired from the Department of Agriculture after serving 31 years working in data analytics, statistical analysis and correlations culminating with her assignment in the Computation Division. Libby took great pride in serving on the first Equal Employment Opportunity Advisory Committee at the Department of Agriculture where she ensured civil rights laws against discrimination in the workforce against minorities were enforced. She received several citations and commendations for her high degree of commitment, exceptional people skills, superb leadership, and superior meritorious service as one of the first minority supervisors in the Department of Agriculture. Libby accepted the Lord and was baptized at an early age. She joined Sergeant Memorial Presbyterian church and faithfully attended services and served as a Deacon under the pastoral leadership of Dr. Reverend James L. Allen. She served on several committees until her health no longer permitted her to continue. Spending time with family was very important to Libby. She looked forward to celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions, and holidays. Libby, along with all the Everett siblings, loved to host parties for family and friends. Basement parties, cookouts, attending the Northeastern Presbyterian Church Usher Board picnic at Sandy Point State Park were staples in her life. Also, attending the Brinkley and Clark Family Reunions was the norm for Libby and her siblings. Libby's love for family was demonstrated by her work in establishing the Brinkley Family Reunion in the 1980's and later the Clark Family Reunion committee in the 1990's. Following Libby's retirement from the federal government, she joined several civic and community organizations. Libby was an active member of the Marlow Heights Senior Citizens Association, South County Seniors Club, United States Junior Auxiliary (Jaycees), Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve Association, and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She had a heart of giving and was always looking for a worthy cause to show her support. Libby generously contributed to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Diabetes Association, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Muscular Dystrophy Association, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), American Cancer Society, and Democratic political campaigns. Throughout her life, Libby filled her leisure time creating a beautifully landscaped flower garden and was a member of the Princess Garden Association. Libby was known for her infamously beautiful "Rock Garden" that was admired by neighbors and friends alike. Libby also loved to travel to different locations. Libby was also known for her very stylish dress and her penchant to have her hair done every two weeks. After 40 years of living in the house in Temple Hills, Maryland, Libby moved to the Collington Life Care Retirement Community in Mitchellville, MD in 2010. For 12 years, she loved living independently while dining and entertaining with friends. She was known and loved by the staff at Collington and was affectionately referred to as "Mama Libby." Libby was known for her honesty, frugality, and love for family, especially her love for her only grandson Tony.
