Glovenia S. Harrison

GLOVENIA SARAH (LUCAS) HARRISON was born on July 31, 1921, Washington, D.C. (Tenleytown), to the late Edgar and Annell (Moten) Lucas. She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Harrison, Sr., two brothers (Edgar and Earl) and one sister (Othelia Brady). She was the mother of seven children, William R. Harrison, Jr. (Myrtle -deceased), Ronald Harrison, Sr., Lewis Harrison (Sophia), Joyce Waters (Richard), Glowena Harrison, Eleana Johnson and Maria Harrison. Glovenia (Glo) attended D.C. Public Schools and was baptized at Rock Creek Baptist Church where she remained a dedicated member throughout her life. Her early work experiences included the Veterans Administration and Bureau of Engraving and Printing, She and her husband opened Harrison’s Market at 1369 L Street, S.E. Glo would manage Harrison’s Market from early morning to late evening six days per week. She would regularly close the store for lunch and take her daughters on mid-day shopping trips, thereby, creating lifelong shopaholics. Because of her caring and giving nature, Harrison’s Market became the neighborhood gathering place to socialize. On occasions, she would provide food to those in need ensuring families were able to eat. In 1969, the market closed due to neighborhood redevelopment. Following the closing of the store, Glo worked as a Sales Associate at Woodward and Lothrop and Consumer United Insurance Company (CUIC), from where she retired in 1991. She maintained relationships with her CUIC co-workers throughout her retirement years. After retirement, Glo enjoyed going to yard sales, taking casino trips with her sister, and chauffeuring senior neighbors. She also enjoyed spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her dearly. Not once did Glo forget anyone’s birthday. She would have cards and gifts ready to mail months in advance. She was the family’s historian, the human version of Google. Glo leaves to cherish her memory: one sister-in-law, Irene Lowe of Atlanta, GA, seven children, a bonus son, Gerald Warfield, nineteen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, eleven greatgreat grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
