Ms. Thelma Louise Brice

Thelma Louise Brice was born on September 13, 1938, to the late Carrie Louise Miller and was raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Her journey eventually brought her to Washington, D.C., where she attended Cardozo High School and began building a life centered on family, purpose, and perseverance. After completing her education, Thelma married the late John Edd Brice, and together they welcomed six sons. Her family became the center of her life, and she devoted herself to raising her boys with intention, discipline, and love. Thelma corrected them because she cared, guided them because she believed in them, and loved them without reservation. Through her words, example, and unwavering expectations, she instilled in her sons a powerful truth: opportunities are earned, obstacles can be conquered, and giving up was simply never an option. She expected her sons to respect others, work honestly, and always give their best. Her philosophy was simple: "If you don't work, you don't eat." Thelma worked for the federal government, including the General Services Administration (GSA) and the Architect of the Capitol, where she later retired. True to her steadfast work ethic and devotion to her family, she worked evening shifts so she could be home during the day to care for her boys. She was a provider, protector, teacher, disciplinarian, and mother. Above all, Thelma was always present. Thelma was a woman of extraordinary strength, determination, and sacrifice. Her strength was rooted in her faith and her trust in Jesus Christ. She believed that all you needed was faith the size of a mustard seed, and that belief was evident in the way she trusted in Jesus. She ruled with a loving heart and an iron fist. Her standards were high, and her expectations were clear. A respected presence throughout Southeast Washington, D.C., Thelma was known for her directness, wisdom, humor, and unmistakable personality. She commanded respect naturally and left an impression on everyone she met. She was strong, straightforward, protective, and unforgettable-simply by being herself. Her greatest accomplishment and most enduring legacy will always be her family. The values she instilled, the sacrifices she made, and the lessons she taught continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. Thelma leaves behind more than memories; she leaves a legacy of strength, resilience, hard work, love, faith, and family that will continue through every generation that follows. Thelma was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Carrie Miller; her two sons, Steve and Reginald Brice; and her daughter-in-love, Charmean. She leaves to cherish her memory and comfort one another: her sons, Stanley, John, Dwayne Sr., and Keith Brice; and her daughter-in-love, LaShon Brice. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Steve, Carvell, Dwayne Jr., Shavante, Barrington, Justin, Kayla Brice, Tavaris Kinchen, Catreise Jones and Tony Vaughn, as well as four great-grandchildren, her uncle JW, and a host of loving cousins, extended family members, and friends whom she held close to her heart.
