Live streaming available at www.popefh.com The Life Story of Ruth Rebecca Culp Ruth Rebecca Culp’s amazing life began January 16, 1950, in LaPlata, MD. Because Ruthie was breach birth, she was the first African American baby born in LaPlata Hospital. She was raised by her loving mother and father, the late Joseph Leroy and Blanche Hill. She was raised in Shiloh, Maryland and then they moved to Washington, DC when she was in grade school. Ruthie was educated in the Washington, DC school system and graduated from Chamberlin Vocational High School in 1968. She continued to work for the U.S. Housing of Urban Development as a Clerk. She had a distinguished career and retired after 25 years from AT&T. Ruthie, as was affectionately called, was the eldest of three girls. Ruthie married Air Force SSgt. John “Kevin” Irvine Culp, May 16, 1972, and moved to Nebraska. In 1974, the couple moved to New Hampshire, where they welcomed their only child, Cherie Michelle Mason. Ruthie returned to Maryland in the 1970’s where she enjoyed a full life, filled with loving family and friends. Ruthie departed peacefully on June 1, 2020. Ruthie lived a grand life filled with family, close friends, and social events. She had a heart of gold and was a true example of love to everyone she came across. Make no mistake, Ruthie never met a stranger. Ruthie had a host of extended family members, who all loved and adored her. She showered each one with love and affection as if they were her very own. During the 1970’s, Ruthie went to work for AT&T in various Administrative positions. Ruthie’s colleagues quickly became lifelong friends, creating many wonderful memories. Her colleagues could tell the funniest stories about their days working in DC and Virginia. After 20 years, she retired as the CSSS of FTS 2000 accounts. She later went on to work part time at Target, where she continued to make more friends and offer superior customer service. After retirement, Ruthie could be found enjoying time with her immediate and extended family. Ruthie took great joy in spending quality time with her granddaughter, Cierra aka her “BFF”. They enjoyed talking on the phone for hours, going out to their favorite restaurants, shopping and even teaching CiCi how to drive. Ruthie cherished her daily phone calls with Cherie during her evening commute home. That was their special time together. Ruthie loved spending quality time and would help organize special “Girls Day” with Cherie and her friends. “Mama Ruth” as Cornell called her, would enjoy many talks about life, as they prepared family meals. Ruthie took great joy in Cornell being such a wonderful husband and father. Ruthie, along with her sisters, enjoyed family group chats and quarterly family events. She really enjoyed going to the casinos, playing lottery, taking long drives to Newburg, MD (her family home), eating crabs and having breakfast at her favorite IHOP (being served by her favorite waitress). Known for quick wit and fun-loving spirit, Ruthie loved helping people. Ruthie had a gift of making people feel special. Many times, she’d give her last to help someone and was known to send a “surprise” gift just because. She had a love-hate relationship with the Washington Redskins and could often be found cussing them out during any given Sunday game. Ruthie was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her loving daughter Cherie (Cornell) Mason, granddaughters, Cierra Culp-Mason, Jhamiyia Pleasant, Niche Poindexter; grandson Jhavonte Mason; great-grands Jaxxon Mason, Amari Gibson, Ma’layah Mason, Lakirah Mason; two sisters Marguerite (Benny, deceased) Hill, Betty (Walter “Bud”) Jones; nephew Brian (Maria) Jones; great-nieces, Mia Jones, Bria Jones, Janay McCants; a devoted cousin, Lindsey “Buddy” Green; a god-daughter, Simone Haskins; a host of family and friends.
