Luella C. Coleman

Luella C. Coleman was born on January 24, 1920 in Byromville, Georgia. Luella was the baby of thirteen children born to the late Mr. Harrison and Mrs. Luella Coleman. Luella gained her wings on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Southern Maryland Hospital Center. She was preceded in death by her Father Harrison, Mother Luella, two loving and devoted children Barbara and Curtis Coleman, one foster son Melvin Starkes and twelve brothers and sisters. Luella leaves to cherish her memory one son Steve Coleman Jr., one Goddaughter Annie Hooten, three grandchildren Tonia B Henderson, Curtis D Coleman, Dyanna Coleman, two foster children Lionel Butts, Rickey Price and two great grandchildren Remi Coleman, Sophia Coleman, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Luella attended school in North Bay Point, GA and graduated from North Bay Point High School in 1935. Education was important to Luella. She instilled education in her family. One of Luella’s saying to her grandchildren was “once you receive your education, diploma or degree(s) no one can take it from you” As a young adult Luella moved to Washington, D.C. to live with one of her older brothers James. Luella enjoyed crochet, knitting, traveling, giving functions, shopping, designing her own clothes, shoes and hats. After working for the Federal Government in the early seventies, Luella became a foster parent for over 40 years to three loving and devoted young adults Melvin Starkes, Lionel Butts, and Rickey Price whom she raised, loved and cherished as her own raising them to become self-sufficient citizens as well as others that were in need of care. Luella was a stylish individual always looking like she just stepped off of New York or Paris runway or right out of Vogue Magazine. She was a jokester as well as a praying woman. Luella would pray with you as well as pray you right out of her house (Give Them To GOD) she would always say. Luella was a prominent member of Friendship Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. for a little over 50 years and served on several ministries. Later in life Luella became a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Clinton, MD where she was an elder, a faithful Tither and a believer in GOD. She was truly blessed with a gift to soothe the pain, and ease comfort her family and friends as well as those in need, Luella had the wisdom to tell a person when they were wrong or made a mistake without making the person feel guilty. Her love and wisdom will carry on in the lives of the many people that she touched during her 97 years of life. Psalm 27:4 One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. “Rest In Peace”!
