Ms Joyce Lowery

Joyce Isabella Nicholas-Lowery was born in Washington, DC on June 7, 1942, to the late Lola Gray-Nicholas and James Jessie Nicholas, Sr. Joyce was sent to be with the Lord on November 13, 2021, at the White Oak Advent Hospital located in Silver Spring, Maryland. She was the third of four children and the youngest girl. She was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church and received her early education in the Alexandria, VA Catholic School System up to the 9th grade and then went on to attend Cardoza High School in the Washington, DC Public School System, where she obtained her high school diploma in 1960 and excelled academically. She enrolled in the Washington School for Secretaries. In 1972, she enrolled at the Federal City College in Washington, DC to pursue a degree in Business Administration. She took various jobs including the Coast Guards and Department of Education, until she retired in 1995, after 29 years of Federal Service. During her work tenure, she received several work performance awards. Joyce was an avid reader. She enjoyed shopping at the malls and the local Dutch Market. She also enjoyed watching game and talk shows, soap operas and a good comedy or movie. She loved traveling and visiting many different states and countries. Her favorite country to visit was Jamaica. Her most exciting travel time was spent on cruises. She was a football fan and favored the Washington Team. Further, she has attended several games at the FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland to root for the hometown team. She also watched tennis consistenly. Nonetheless, her love for dolls lead her to build an extensive doll collection. Most of all, she loved to spend time with family and friends. She leaves to mourn her constant companion of 50 years, William E. Hawkins, Jr., her daughters: Kim Charisse Lowery and Angela Michelle Nicholas-Disu. She is lovingly remember by her two sisters: Esther I Nicholas-Thomas (Jack), Ruby A. Nicholas - Shello (Mervin), and one brother, James A. Nicholas, Jr. She also has one nephew, Victor L. Thomas (Karen). Furthermore, she was a doting grandmother to Johnnie Dartanion, Deborah Angelique, and Donna Summer Blocker, as well as, Stephen Renard Young, Jr. She was a great grandmother to Aden Nicholas, Autumn Rose, Andrew Knight (deceased), Makenzie Angel, Danielle Maria, and Aurora Morton. She also had a host of other friends and family. Joyce was a wonderful person with a loving and giving heart. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Peace Mother from all of us!
