In Loving Memory of Cynthia Harper Harris April 8, 1941 – August 9, 2026 With profound love and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Cynthia Harper Harris, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, sister, caretaker and friend. Cynthia, affectionately known as a (Cyn) was a beautiful and remarkable woman by all who knew her, departed this life at the age of 85 in the presence of her loving daughter Cindy. Cyn was born on April 8, 1941, in Halifax County, North Carolina, to the late Robert H. Harper and Nellie Batchelor Harper. She was the youngest of eleven children and was raised in a loving family whose bonds remained important to her throughout her life. Her siblings were Quincy (Auntie), Robert (Jack), Claudia, Norris, Darwin (Clay), Helen, Harriette (Blackie), Patsy, Maryanne and Mildred. She was preceded in death by her siblings Quincy, Claudia, Mildred, Robert, Norris and Darwin. Cyn was a woman of strong faith and was a devoted Baptist. Her faith, strength and love for her family guided her throughout her life. She understood that family was one of God's greatest blessings and she made it her mission to keep those bonds strong. She was united in marriage to Emanuel D. Harris, the love of her life and the father of her children. Cyn lovingly cared for her husband during his illness until his passing in May 1995. She later devoted herself to caring for her beloved son, Darwin “Keith” Harris, who lived with sickle cell disease. She cherished Keith deeply and cared for him with extraordinary love, patience and devotion until his untimely passing in June 2020. Emanuel and Keith both preceded Cyn in death. Cyn was a devoted mother to her three children: Cynthia “Cindy” Harris-Milner; Robin Wainwright (son-in-law Don Jose' Wainwright); and Kenneth “Kenny” Harper Harris. Her children were among her greatest accomplishments and sources of pride. She worked tirelessly to ensure that they understood the importance of education, hard work, independence and building meaningful careers. She wanted nothing less than the very best for each of them. Her love continued through the generations. She was a proud grandmother to Robert W. Milner Jr. (Yolanda M. Milner), Nicholas C. Milner, Alexis D. Wainwright and Don Jose' Wainwright, II. She was also blessed to be a great-grandmother to Noah L. Milner and Laila D. Milner. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought another special dimension of love, joy and purpose to her life. Through them, her legacy will continue to live on. Cyn was blessed with so much love from all of her nieces, nephews and cousins. They brought her countless moments of joy, laughter and fun that she deeply cherished. The time she spent with them created beautiful memories that she carried in her heart. We will always be grateful for the happiness they brought into her life and for the love they shared with our Mom. She was also was a dedicated Administrative Assistant and Caretaker, but her greatest work was the love and care she poured into her family. She was the family organizer, the one who helped bring everyone together for family reunions, holiday gatherings, picnics and special occasions. She took great joy in planning and making memories and she understood the importance of keeping family connected across generations. She was also a woman who knew how to enjoy life. Cyn loved dancing, traveling, shopping, concerts, Broadway plays, museums, listening to her favorite gospel music and a big-time fan of legendary R&B artist Al Green. Cyn was a beautiful, stylish, well-dressed woman who believed in always looking her best. She was very particular about things and took pride in her appearance. She carried herself with grace, confidence and a strong sense of who she was. She was a true lady—elegant, independent, strong-minded and unapologetically herself. She was also a passionate sports fan. She was a die-hard Washington Redskins—now Washington Commanders—fan. She and Emanuel were season ticket holders and attended games together, creating memories that she treasured. She especially admired Coach Joe Gibbs. Her love of football extended to watching a couple of her favorite players, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Russell Wilson with each team he played with. College basketball also held a special place in her heart. Cyn was a devoted Georgetown University basketball fan and greatly admired the legendary John Thompson. She and Emanuel attended many Georgetown games together. Among her favorite players were Allen Iverson, Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning. Above all, Cyn was a mother who wanted the very best for her children. She encouraged her children to pursue their dreams, make something of themselves and always strive for excellence. Her lessons were sometimes firm, but they came from a place of deep love and a desire to see her children succeed. Cynthia leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured simply by the number of years she lived, but by the love she gave, the lives she touched, the memories she created and the family she worked so hard to keep together. She was strong. She was beautiful. She was stylish. She was loving. She was particular. She was a caretaker. She was a mother. She was a grandmother. She was a great-grandmother. She was a sister. She was a wife. She was a woman of faith. And she was Mom. Her family will forever remember her laughter, her determination, her love of music and sports, her beautiful sense of style, her adventurous spirit, her family gatherings, and the countless ways she showed her love. Though her earthly journey has come to an end, the imprint she left on her family will continue for generations to come. We take comfort in knowing that Cynthia is now resting in the loving arms of God, reunited with her husband Emanuel, her beloved Keith and the family members who went before her.
