Mr. Carl W. Sumter

Carl Wilvester Sumter was born on January 2, 1940 in Washington, DC to Henry McKinley Sumter, Jr. and Eloise Coward Sumter. Carl’s middle name was derived from a combination of his father’s 2 best friends, William and Sylvester. He was raised in Washington, DC and graduated from Spingarn High School in 1958. Carl was employed as a cook at St. Elizabeth Hospital in 1961 where he worked until he retired. His first marriage to Joanne Jordan produced four children Carl, Darlene, Cheryl, and Debbie. Carl also had a son named Carlos Hunter. Carl met Edna Proctor at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He married her on June 30, 2009 in the City of Alexandria, VA. He was a wonderful, caring, and loving husband to Edna. They enjoyed excursions to Atlantic City and getting together with family for cookouts. Carl was the cook of the family, his favorite meals included barbecue pigs’ feet, fried chicken and ribs, and pancakes from scratch. His favorite pastime was a good game of poker, tunk, or 500 rummy. He spent summers in the Sumter’s hometown of Yemassee, South Carolina. If you wanted to get on Carl’s good side, bring him a lemon meringue pie and all was forgiven. Carl was a happy man. He lived a good life. Carl was preceded in death by his parents Henry McKinley Sumter Jr., Eloise D. (Coward) Sumter, his brother Henry McKinley Sumter III, his sister Joann Marjorie Sumter and his stepdaughters Daylene Proctor and June Cole. Carl is survived by his wife, Edna “Paulette” Sumter; his children Carl Christopher Sumter, Darlene Sumter, Sunny Sumter-Sana, Deborah Miller (Louis Miller, Jr.), Carlos Hunter (Joanne Hunter); his stepchildren Robert Darrin Proctor (Jean Smith Proctor), Thomas W. Proctor, Dwayne F. Proctor (Karrie Proctor), Evelyn L. Proctor, Melissa L. Proctor; grandchildren Charlene Sumter, Layla Sana, Jakobi Sana, Keyona Nwaolu-Bryant (Aaron Bryant) , Louis Miller III, Tequea Miller, Carlos Hunter, Jr., Marcellus Hunter, Zhande Hunter; sisters Stephanie Hopkins (James Hopkins) and Donna Sumter; “his favorite niece” Tony Jones (Bruce Jones); and great-grandchildren nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
