Mr. Calvin Gooding

Calvin Gooding was born on May 27, 1942, in Kinston, NC to the late Mr. and Mrs. Usher and Lula Gooding. He was educated in the Kinston public schools and graduated from Adkin High School. As a youth, he was an accomplished swimmer and swam competitively with the Holloway Sharks Swim Team in Kinston. He was also a member of the Shaw AFB Swim Team in SC, and a Water Safety Instructor where he obtained his certification which provides the most comprehensive training for swim instructors for The American Red Cross. Calvin was also a stand-out baseball player at Adkin High School, and played for several semi-pro teams in Kinston, NC, Sumter, SC, and in Washington, DC. His military friends would often brag about how he would hit the ball so far that it could not be seen thereafter. In 1960, Calvin joined the United States Air Force where he served 4 years and was a 5-point veteran in the Vietnam War. He attended the U.S. Army Engineer School at Ft. Belvoir, VA as a Photomapping Negative Engraver from 1960-1964. He also attended Allen University in Columbia, SC. In June of 1963, Calvin was united in holy matrimony to Doris Glisson at Shaw AFB, SC which lasted a lifelong 61 years. In January of 1966, he began employment with the U.S. Geological Survey in Arlington, VA as a Cartographic Drafter and a Photogrammetrist. He eventually transferred to the U.S. Geological Survey National Center in Reston, VA where he retired after 27 years from the Federal Government. He was later employed at The National Academy of Sciences, The Washington Post as a Safety and Security Supervisor, and at Inova Fairfax Hospital in the Security Division. Calvin dearly loved God the Father and His Holy Son Jesus the Christ. He received God's salvation in October 1970 and received the blessed baptism of the Holy Spirit in January 1971. His other hobbies included: deer hunting, fishing, camping, boating/canoeing, gardening, tennis and handy-man projects. Calvin Gooding's legacy is carried on by his loving wife, Doris; his children, Carolyn Okoroji, Marcelle Curtis, Michelle Carlyle, Calvin, Andre, and April Gooding; his special grandson Ryan; brother-in-law Herbert Lee; sister in-law Joyce Brunson; son-in-law Fred Carlyle; a revered son, Freddie Walker; honorable friends, Larry Gulley, William Hamm, and Oscar Fuller. His adored six grandchildren, and a host of nieces, and nephews who will miss his absence, along with a wide circle of friends and colleagues.
