In Everlasting Memory of MARY LEE WINS Whom We Loved Dearly A precious one from us is gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in our homes That never can be filled Mary Lee Wins was born on August 15, 1947, in the small town of Crandall, MS. She was the second child of three born from the union of Thad Wins and Mary Ester Gray. Mary graduated from Baker High School in Columbus, GA, in 1967. After graduating from High School, Mary moved to Washington DC with her family. She went to the Job Corps in Oklahoma, where she acquired her skills to become a nurse’s assistant. She began her career as a nurse’s assistant at Providence Hospital in Washington DC. She worked there for a number of years then moved on to work at Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Washington DC, where she met and married Otis Johnson. Mary retired from Saint Elizabeth Hospital after over 25 years of service, in 2005. Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church of District Heights, where she served as an Usher for a number of years, a member of the Baptism Ministry, and was a faithful participant in the Women Sunday School Class. Mary loved the Lord and enjoyed worshiping Him at all times. She often spoke about her church family and how they helped her in her times of need. Mary met no strangers, she enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone and she loved helping people. Besides her immediate family, Mary’s best friend Barbara Price, who was as close as a sister to her, was always there for her and very supportive throughout her adult life and instrumental in her success. Mary enjoyed watching daytime soap operas and keeping up with current events on the evening news. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends and enjoyed trips to the Casino when possible with her friend Gwen. Mary is survived by her loving and devoted mother, Mary E. Gray and loving stepmother, Hazel Wins; her sisters Christine (Chris) Lott, Claudia (Jean) Wallace (Wally), Jerrell Lynn Gray, and Demetria Portis (Manus); Her brothers, Eddie Winns (Mary), Cedric Wins (Cassandra), Hester Gray, Jr. (Jennifer); and an Aunt, Laura Leverette, a god-daughter, Shelita Ellis; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
